It is another day in the fight against CRPS (Color The World Orange Day)

First Monday of November – By Xiaotong Meng

The first Monday of November is Color the World Orange Day – a day that deserves more recognition.

This meaningful day intends to educate the public about misunderstood and rare illnesses, and give support to those who are affected by Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS), a malfunction in the central nervous system.

Over the years, many medical specialists have been working on finding a treatment for this condition, however, there is currently no cure for this syndrome. The only thing a doctor could do is to apply different methods to relieve the pain from a patient.

As a result, we should make the most of today to donate and raise funds in helping people who possess CRPS. It is also a good chance to raise awareness about this disorder and call for actions.

I voted stickers - Election Day - November holidays blog post

It’s Election Day

First Tuesday of November – By Nathaniel Chambers

Happy Election Day!

Whether you are Republican, Democrat, Libertarian or a part of any other political party, you have the right to get out and vote today. Express the freedom to vote for whoever you believe are the right fits, and make sure you let anyone who is on the fence about voting know why it is important to vote.

The right to vote is what separates a democracy from a dictatorship, and without expressing that right to vote these things could eventually change.

And make sure you don’t let political disagreements ruin your friendships, because losing a friend over a disagreement is not worth it, no matter how wrong you feel they are in their views.

Happy voting!

A small act can make a big difference in the community (National Day of Community Service)

November 4 – By Xiaotong Meng

The National Community Service Day is a public holiday celebrated on November 4 after Dominica’s Independence Day.

On Nov 3, 1978, The United Kingdom finally ended their rule over the Caribbean island nation of Dominica. Thus, Dominica was declared as an independent nation.

However, the streets usually became filthy with endless amounts of garbage after the celebration of Independence Day. In this case, the government proclaimed a community service day to encourage its citizens to join the clean-up activities.

Marine Corps seal - Marine Corps birthday - November holidays blog post

Happy birthday U.S. Marine Corps!

November 10 – By Xiaotong Meng

The United States Marines have played significant roles in almost every U.S. battle. On Nov 10, 1921, the U.S. government declared that day became the birthday of the Marine Corps.

Back to November 10, 1775, a new corps was created after the introduction of the Continental Marine Act, which aimed to provide additional security for the Continental Navy.

In 1798, the legislation was passed by the Congress to separate the U.S. Navy and set up its own department. Later in the same year, the U.S. Marines divided their duties into different branches.

The Marine Corps was formed on July 11, 1798, but it was officially identified in 1921.

Most of us have never fought in a war or joined the military, but we can still show our respect and appreciation to the Marine Corps in honor of their hard work defending the country to make us safe.

If you know a friend or family member who is currently or has been part of the Marine, do not hesitate to reach out and express your gratitude to them.

ice cream sundae - National Sundae Day - November holidays blog post

Stay cool and eat an ice cream sundae (National Sundae Day)

November 11 – By Xiaotong Meng

November 11 is the National Sundae Day to satisfy your sweet tooth. You can visit an ice cream shop or make one at home of your favorite flavor to treat yourself.

While we enjoy a delicious sundae, do you know who invented this dessert?

Surprisingly, there are three different versions ranked from earliest to most recent. The first story is about a man named George Hallauer in Two Rivers, Wisconsin, putting a dish of ice cream with chocolate sauce on top of soda, which created ice cream sundae in 1881.

The second statement tells of an Illinois druggist Mr. Sonntag used his last name to call a new dish in 1890. Since Sonntag means Sunday in German, then the name was spelled from Sunday to sundae.

The last edition is about Chester Platt, the co-founder of pharmacy, placing cherry syrup and candied cherries on top of ice cream on April 3, 1892, which he called “Cherry Sunday”. Later in May, Platt and John M. Scott also started to provide “Strawberry Sunday” and “Chocolate Sunday”.

Regardless of how ice cream sundae was produced, it has become a popular sweet treat for many people.

Stand up to bullying (Anti-Bullying Week)

Third week of November – By Xiaotong Meng

Anti-bullying week often starts in the third week of November every year. It is a reminder of the long-term effects on a victim’s physical and mental health of bullying.

The U.K.’s National Children’s Bureau (N.C.B) and the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty (N.S.P.C.C) observed the Anti-Bullying Alliance in 2002, in order to provide support as well as educate people about different types of bullying.

Two years later, the first anti-bullying week was held annually with a specific theme.

In 2017, the Anti-Bullying Association founded Odd Socks Day, starting on the first day of anti-bullying week. The purpose of this introduction was to bring diversity and inclusion while symbolizing the differences among one another.

From the week of November 14 to 18, it is the time for us to raise our voices, fight against intimidation, encourage zero-tolerance policy and pledge emotional support to those victims.

Education support professionals, thank y’all for making our lives better (Education Support Professionals Day)

Third Wednesday of November – By Xiaotong Meng

When we think about education support, teachers are always the first to come to our minds. But have you noticed a lot of other staff members also contribute their efforts to lighten each child’s future?

They are hard working employees who are responsible for driving school buses, repairing school buildings, cleaning up classrooms and cooking lunch. Without their endless support, we cannot have such a comfortable environment to learn new knowledge.

Education Support Professionals Day was introduced on November 16 by the National Education Association (N.E.A).

Teaching a child is not an easy task, but many educators and workers are willing to dedicate their time to provide care for each student and ensure their safety at school.

We often ended up forgetting about those unsung influencers who are around us. Today is the best time to recognize and thank those education support professionals.

We can put up their pictures on school bulletin boards, share their stories on social media or leave a thank you note to them. The core of this holiday is to show appreciation for what education support professionals did for each child.

international students - International Students Day - November holidays blog post

Education is the key to success (International Students Day)

November 17 – By Xiaotong Meng

November 17 is International Students Day, remembering the significant contributions of thousands of students in Prague who fought for their rights to higher education under the Nazis.

In 1939, some students at Charles University in Prague formed an independent Czechoslovak Republic institution. However, the Nazis crushed their establishment and a student passed away.

Dozens of students were outraged by the death, so they created an anti-Nazi demonstartion. Unfortunately, the Nazis arrested over 1,200 students and sent them to concentration camps, yet many of them did not survive.

On November 17, the Nazis executed nine protesters without a formal trial; then this day turned into a national holiday to commemorate the courage of those student activists.

Today, the majority of young people have access to education, but there are still thousands of children who are struggling to go to school in many countries.

We should never take any privilege we own for granted.

labor appreciation day - November holidays blog post

No today is NOT Labor Day, but something even better (Labor Appreciation Day)

November 23 – By Nathaniel Chambers

You really have to hand it to Japan for this one.

Every year the country of Japan celebrates their labor workers in a special way. How exactly do they do this, you may ask? Well, they celebrate Labor Appreciation Day to show their appreciation for all the people who work in the labor sector.

Also known as Labor Thanksgiving Day, Labor Appreciation Day is truly a great way of showing labor workers just how much of an impact they make on everyone’s lives. And while America celebrates Labor Day every year, Japan’s Labor Appreciation Day just means more.

Yes, in America Labor Day is a federal holiday, but do we really take that day to show our thanks and appreciation for workers? Not really. We just take the day to hang out with friends and barbecue on a grill.

And while that is great and all, Japan is actually very proactive in their Labor Appreciation Day. On this holiday, school children actually write letters and put together gifts for these labor workers. It is a great way for them to say thank you, even if they might not be old enough to truly appreciate the importance of the labor sector yet.

At the same time, a lot of companies will also take this day to review the accomplishments of their workers. They celebrate their workers by reminding them what they mean to the company.

And the best part is, this show of appreciation is not just smoke and mirrors for the mere point of celebrating a holiday. These labor workers’ bosses genuinely appreciate all their workers do for them and all they do to help keep their country functioning well.

There is no question about it that the labor sector is a very important entity in the workforce. In Japan, however, it just seems to mean more based on the fact that they take the time to celebrate these workers.

Happy Labor Appreciation Day. We are all better off because of labor workers!

So each Thanksgiving we get to celebrate, let’s carve up a turkey, scoop some potatoes, eat vegetables mixed with a little extra fat and love, fill up on dessert and fall asleep while watching the Lions, Bills and Vikings host the annual Thanksgiving Day NFL games. And let’s not forget to thank our family and friends while we’re at it.

Black Friday phone - November holidays blog post

Oops, outta my way, it is Black Friday!

Day after Thanksgiving – By Xiaotong Meng

Are you ready to take out your pocketbook and raid your favorite stores on November 25?

Yes, it is Black Friday, one of the craziest times year round after Thanksgiving. A large number of people would stand in long lines outside shopping malls to buy a bunch of stuff.

Most importantly, plenty of stories today would provide different discounts to people, which could save a lot of money than usual.

Although Black Friday is a shop heaven for customers to have fun and stores to generate profits, it is also a huge crowd-controlling nightmare for the police officers. Many cops usually spend the whole day managing the order of each street.

While today’s shopping gives us great deals, bonding with friends and family members can totally outweigh the pleasure of purchasing goods.

cyber Monday deal tag - November holidays blog post

A Cyber Monday brief

Monday after Thanksgiving – By Nathaniel Chambers

Did you know that Cyber Monday actually originated as White Wednesday back in 2003? Essentially, 1-800 Flowers was trying to come up with a creative way to combat Black Friday by undercutting the day with an anagram with the opposite color and by starting two days prior.

Jump ahead two years later and the National Retail Federation wanted to encourage people to shop online. Since there was only a limited supply of sale items in the stores, people who did not get a chance to buy something while getting trampled as the doors opened on Black Friday got the chance to find some similar deals while mindlessly returning to work the following Monday.

Jump ahead to the more modern days and we could not imagine a world where Cyber Monday did not exist. Not only is it a great opportunity for retail stores to push their online market – which is where more people are shopping than ever before – but it is a great opportunity for e-commerce stores to throw their hat in the ring and have the opportunity to increase their sales as well.

And as of 2020, Cyber Monday has overtaken Black Friday in terms of spending and sales, and it is only going to continue to surpass the day-after-Thanksgiving shopping day that originated in the 1950s, and rightfully so. When you can find Cyber Monday sales at places like MyFrontPageStory.com, why wouldn’t you want to get in on all the Cyber Monday deals that are happening right now.

Christmas Day is right around the corner, so get your Christmas gifts early and on sale today as it just so happens to be Cyber Monday.

Giving Tuesday - November holidays blog post

Giving Tuesday is about making a difference

Tuesday after Thanksgiving – By Xiaotong Meng

Each year, people kick off the holiday season by shopping for their favorite Thanksgiving themed decorations and a lot of delicious food, but do not forget to give back to the local community.

Giving Tuesday was established in 2012 by New York’s 92nd Street Y in partnership with the United Nations Foundation, offering people some time to take actions benefiting the community.

On Nov 27, 2012, this holiday was covered by The Washington Post and ABC News. Shortly in 2018, a total of $125 million was funded via Facebook within an hour on Giving Tuesday, which marked a new record on this platform.

Giving Tuesday is on Nov 29 this year. You can engage in this holiday by donating to different charities, volunteering at a church or hospital.

Contributing your efforts on this special day will make you feel proud.

Conclusion

November is a month filled with special days that highlight the importance of community, appreciation, and giving back. From raising awareness for those affected by Complex Regional Pain Syndrome on Color The World Orange Day, to expressing gratitude to labor workers on Labor Appreciation Day, the month encourages us to reflect on the positive impact we can make in our communities.

Celebrating Thanksgiving, supporting education professionals, standing up against bullying, and contributing to charitable causes like Giving Tuesday, all provide opportunities to engage with the world in a meaningful way. Whether it’s through small acts of kindness or larger community efforts, each November observance serves as a reminder that every effort, no matter how big or small, contributes to creating a better, more compassionate world.
