Brian Rachel says he knew early on that he and Mary K were meant to be together — he just wasn’t sure exactly when the feeling started. The two met while working together at a manufacturing company in Ohio, where Brian drove forklifts and Mary K packed boxes. Twenty-four years of marriage later, that early instinct has held up.
Their marriage has carried them through the demands of military life. As an Army wife, Mary K uprooted again and again alongside Brian’s career, building new connections in every new city while holding the family steady at home.
“Without her, I could have easily ended up in jail or dead,” Brian said. “She made me a better person, and I’ve tried to do as much as I could to provide for her and our family because of that.”
The couple raised four children together — Taylor, Lauryn, George and Emma — and Mary K’s role as their anchor never wavered, even during Brian’s deployments, when she managed the household largely on her own.
“She’s been the glue to our family while my dad was gone at work,” daughter Lauryn said. “I never realized how much she’d gone through until I had my own daughter.”
That daughter, Ava, is now the newest addition to a growing list of people Mary K takes care of — this time as a grandmother. Family members say her fierce dedication to everyone around her hasn’t dimmed a bit with the new title.
If there’s one thing Mary K hasn’t mastered, it’s gardening — a running joke in the family, and reportedly the only thing Brian has ever needed to compensate for with an elaborate self-watering system of his own design.
“She is my rock,” Brian said. “She is the foundation of the entire family, and she deserves to be celebrated every day.”
