Mary Ellen McDonough goes by a lot of names — Mom, Mimi, wife, friend — and by every account, she’s shown up fully for every one of those roles for decades.

Raising four children largely on her own while balancing a demanding career, Mary Ellen made sure her kids never went without, whether that meant logging thousands of miles to visit them at school or simply being there for card games and lake days growing up. That devotion never slowed down once her children became parents themselves.

“For decades, Mom, you have been there for us whenever we need something,” her family said. “How many thousands of miles have you logged just to make sure we were fed, clothed, or had warm company?”

Now grandmother to eight, known affectionately as Mimi, Mary Ellen has poured the same tireless energy into her grandchildren that she once gave her own kids — stepping in as babysitter, driver and caretaker without hesitation, and traveling across the country to be part of their lives.

“Mimi has always been abundantly available and hardworking for her children and eventually their children,” her family said, “pouring herself into all eight of her grandchildren with tireless love and presence.”

Beyond her family, Mary Ellen has built a reputation as a true community fixture — she’s worked as a Drug and Alcohol Prevention Specialist, stays closely involved with her alma mater, and regularly shows up to local city council and town hall meetings, as her family puts it, “to give a voice to the voiceless.”

Her enthusiasm, those close to her say, touches everything: the lake, the holidays, her church community, her friends’ lives and achievements. It’s an infectious kind of energy that makes people around her feel genuinely seen.

“We admire the thoughtful, generous, and selfless person that Mimi is,” her family said. “She is always the first to offer a helping hand, a listening ear, or whatever someone needs.”

Now 75, Mary Ellen’s family says there’s no better way to sum up her impact than the role she’s played for decades: the heart of the family, and the person who made sure no one ever felt alone.

“Thank you for the endless road trips, your unwavering patience, and for being the heart of this family,” her family said. “We love you!”
