A Farm Girl’s Grit, A Family’s Foundation

Every family has that one person who quietly holds everything together — for the Ehlers family, that’s Brenda. Raised on a farm with five siblings, she grew up without ever learning how to slack off, and that ethic has defined how she’s shown up for her family ever since.

As a stay-at-home mom, Brenda raised three sons — Wesley, now a devoted husband and father; Bradley, who owns his own tax prep business; and Jeffrey, a partner at an accounting firm — and all three credit her directly for where they’ve ended up.

“She’s the foundation of our success,” Jeffrey said. “Her support made it possible, and she’s fiercely protective of us and of her own mother.”

Brenda’s husband, Tom, has watched her face down more than her share of challenges, including a battle with cancer, without ever losing her footing. He describes her as strong, tough and relentlessly positive — someone who finds the silver lining almost as a reflex.

Wesley remembers his mother as the person who taught him resilience directly: how to take a hit, get back up, and keep moving without dwelling on it. He credits her with pushing him to aim high rather than settle for what was easy.

Dinner together most nights, even through the chaos of middle and high school schedules, was non-negotiable growing up — Brenda’s way of making sure family time stayed a priority no matter how busy life got.

“My mom is defined by her positive energy,” Bradley said. “She loves to laugh, enjoys the little things, and makes stressful days fun just by being around.”

Even now that her boys are grown, Brenda remains the person they call first, with good news or bad — her honesty never comes with judgment attached, just steady support and a willingness to actually listen.

“I never thank her enough for all the little things she does for us,” Tom said. “Not for any reason — just to help out and make everyone feel better.”
