Unveiling the History and Significance of September: From Roman Calendars to Modern Celebrations

September calendar: September history blog post

Have you ever wondered how the month of September got its name?

What about the reason why the month has 30 days?

As we are entering the last day of August, that means tomorrow is the first day of September. And more than that, we’re going to dive into the history of September, the ninth month on the calendar — a month packed with Roman roots, astrological significance, and seasonal symbolism.

Like we mentioned in our History of August post, today’s calendar is a modified version of the Julian calendar, but it wasn’t always this way. Over time, our calendar has evolved — and with that evolution, some names like September no longer match their original meanings.

Let’s answer some intriguing questions about September and uncover why this month is much more than just back-to-school season.

Why is it called September?

The name September derives from the Latin word septem, meaning seven. That’s right — September was originally the seventh month of the Roman calendar. So why is it now the ninth?

Blame January and February.

When those two months were added to the beginning of the calendar around 713 BC, it pushed all the existing months back by two slots to November’s old slot. Despite the shift, the names remained — which is why September still sounds like it should come earlier in the year.

It’s one of those quirks that stuck, and unless you’ve taken a deep dive into calendar history (like you are now!), you’d probably never question it.

Has September always been “September”?

Believe it or not, while the name September has stayed consistent, its place and significance on the calendar have changed. In the earliest Roman calendars, September was indeed the seventh month. However, as the Julian calendarreform came into play in 45 BC, and later the Gregorian calendar in 1582, September eventually became the ninth month — but it retained its original name.

It’s a testament to how language, tradition, and timekeeping evolve but often leave behind traces of their origins.

What are the zodiac signs in September?

If you were born between September 1st and 22nd, your zodiac sign is Virgo, known for traits like logic, practicality and attention to detail. Virgos are often described as gentle, intelligent, and methodical.

From September 23rd to 30th, the sign shifts to Libra, which symbolizes balance, beauty and intellectual depth. Libras are social, value harmony, and often have a refined appreciation for art and aesthetics.

Both signs emphasize thoughtfulness and intellect, fitting traits for a month often associated with new beginnings and renewed focus.

What can I expect from the September night skies?

One of the most notable celestial events in September is the Harvest Moon — the full moon closest to the autumnal equinox. This moon has historically been vital for agriculture, giving farmers extra evening light to bring in the harvest.

In 2024, the Harvest Moon appears on September 17. It’s one of the most visually striking moons of the year and carries rich cultural and seasonal symbolism.

Keep your eyes open throughout the month for sightings of Saturn, Venus and Mars, which are also active in the night sky during September.

What other things represent September?

  • Birth Flower: Forget-Me-Not, symbolizing remembrance and true love — perfect for a month that often feels like a bridge between summer and fall.

  • Birthstone: Sapphire, which symbolizes wisdom, purity, and insight. In ancient lore, sapphires were thought to guard against envy and attract blessings.

  • Seasonal Marker: September is synonymous with transition. It’s when many parts of the world experience the autumn equinox, a time of balance between daylight and darkness.

What else is there to know about the history of September?

  • Labor Day, observed on the first Monday, marks a celebration of workers and the unofficial end of summer in the U.S.

  • 9/11 Remembrance: A somber date that honors those lost and forever changed the course of global politics.

  • Back-to-School Season: September kicks off school, fall sports, and a wave of extracurriculars for students across the country.

  • Football Season Kickoff: The NFL and college football seasons start in September — something we should all be thankful for.

  • Most Popular Month to Get Married: Surprisingly, 16 percent of all weddings take place in September. Why? We’re not quite sure. In fact, this statistic is met with complete confusion (and some eye-rolling) by our CEO Ross Tucker, who finds the whole thing “absolutely ridiculous.” But hey — it works out great for us! It’s the perfect time to order a custom story for your big day.

And finally, yes — September has 30 days, thanks to Julius Caesar’s calendar reforms. Under the Julian calendar, months were adjusted for consistency and balance, and September has kept that 30-day structure ever since.

With all this new knowledge, you’re now equipped to appreciate September beyond just pumpkin spice and back-to-school sales. It’s a month of deep historical roots, astrological meaning, cultural transitions, and personal milestones.

So enjoy the final day of August — and have a happy and informed September!
