Nick Tedesco celebrates his 89th birthday this month, marking nearly nine decades of achievement, service, and unwavering dedication to family and community.
Born in Queens, New York, 89 years ago, Tedesco’s journey from the baseball diamonds of Long Island to the fire stations of his community, and finally to his beloved Tampa home, exemplifies the values of hard work, integrity and compassion.
Tedesco’s athletic prowess became evident early as an exceptional second baseman. His talent earned him a spot in the New York Giants’ minor league system, where he excelled on the field and forged lasting friendships with future baseball legends.
“He was so good that he made it to the pros and played in the minor leagues for the New York Giants, where he became good friends with future Hall of Famer Orlando Cepeda,” recalls his son David. “During one season, Nick received recognition as ‘Most Popular Player,’ while Orlando Cepeda received separate recognition that same season.”
Following his baseball career, Tedesco transitioned into public service, rising to the rank of Fire Captain—a role that showcased his natural leadership abilities and commitment to protecting his community. His colleagues remember him as a fair, decisive leader who never asked others to do what he wouldn’t do himself.
Those closest to Tedesco say his greatest success lies in his role as a father to Nick Jr. (deceased), David and Thomas, and grandfather to seven grandchildren.
“He is a loving and involved father who was very diligent about teaching safety and responsibility first and foremost,” David explains. “He was—and still is—always fair in his judgments and an excellent role model. He has always provided a safe place to land and is a constant, loving presence in our lives.”
Friends and family consistently praise Tedesco’s remarkable memory for important moments in others’ lives. In an age where personal connections often take a backseat to busy schedules, Tedesco stands out as someone who remembers birthdays, anniversaries, and the small details that make relationships meaningful.
The Tedesco family treasury is filled with stories that capture Nick’s character perfectly. During one memorable restaurant outing, all four men—Nick and his three sons—secretly approached their waitress to pay the check. When the meal ended, she diplomatically placed the bill in front of Nick, announcing “The gentleman who spoke to me first.” His triumphant grin proved that experience trumps enthusiasm every time.
At 89, Tedesco continues to find joy in life’s simple pleasures: following his Tampa Bay Lightning and Tampa Bay Rays with his very special friend Kathryn Chastain. Throughout his life, he has enjoyed hunting, fishing, crafting hand-carved ducks, camping, and taking family vacations to the Great Smoky Mountains. These activities reflect a man who understands that life’s greatest treasures are found in shared moments with loved ones.
As Tedesco enters his 90th year, his impact on those around him remains immeasurable. His sons speak of a man whose moral compass never wavered, whose work ethic never faltered, and whose love never diminished.
“Dad, at 89 you continue to inspire us with your strength, wisdom, and generous heart. Your example has taught me what it means to live with purpose and integrity,” Thomas says.
“Happy 89th Birthday, Dad. I’m deeply grateful for everything you’ve given our family over the years. Your steady guidance, unwavering support, and boundless love have shaped me into the man I am today. The impact you’ve had on all our lives is immeasurable,” David reflects.
In an era when true role models can seem scarce, Nick Tedesco stands as a testament to what one person can achieve through dedication, kindness, and an unwavering commitment to doing what’s right. As he celebrates 89 years, his greatest achievement isn’t measured in games won or fires extinguished, but in the lives he’s touched and the family he’s built.
