Since 2016, 72 Steel has been committed to revitalizing U.S. manufacturing. Over the past three years, the company has made a significant impact in a region of Pennsylvania historically defined by steel superiority.

The company’s mission: to build a state-of-the-art, environmentally friendly steel mill in Aliquippa, a city with a rich history tied to steel production. Aliquippa Works began operations in 1909 and was once the largest integrated steel plant in the region, employing over 14,000 workers. This facility played a crucial role in shaping the town’s economy and identity, attracting workers from diverse backgrounds and contributing to the industrial boom of the early 20th century.

Today, 72 Steel is seeking to put its mark on the region’s steel production with what it is calling the “Green Steel” project. Spanning nearly 44 acres, the site incorporates the world’s most advanced steel production technologies, prioritizes energy efficiency, and, once fully operational, will have an annual production capacity of 500,000 tons of high-end steel products, including rebar and section steel.

The Green Steel project represents a $218 million investment, expected to generate annual output valued at $400-$500 million, making it a significant economic driver for both the local community and the state.

“Currently, we have a core team of just under 20 people managing land preparation, engineering design, permit applications, power supply, transportation logistics, and foundation work,” said Dr. Xiaoyan Zhang, Senior Business Advisor at 72 Steel. “We’re also engaging multiple business partners in areas such as engineering, construction, water and rail infrastructure, and power supply.”

Over the next two years, 72 Steel anticipates hiring numerous construction workers and engineers to build the manufacturing facilities, creating a surge in short-term employment. Once operational, the steel mill is expected to employ between 300 and 350 full-time workers, further bolstering the region’s economy.

“From purchasing the land in August 2023 to preparing for operations the following year, it’s been two years of hard work and major milestones,” Zhang said. “We’re setting new goals as we look ahead to job creation and steel production.”

In just a short time, 72 Steel has made a meaningful impact in Pennsylvania. With a long-term vision focused on sustainable steel production, their influence is poised to benefit the Keystone State for generations.

“Our immediate goal is clear: to complete the Aliquippa Steel Mill and strengthen the local economy,” Zhang said. “Once we achieve that, we’ll explore additional projects in Pennsylvania.”
